Microbiology Quality Control Technician

Job Description:

*Company*

The Quality Control Technician performs a variety of microbiology tests and sterility checks to assure culture media products produced by Anaerobe Systems meet established standards, customer specifications and quality goals. The position assists and provides back up to the Product Quality and Development Manager as designated. The position provides minor support for special microbiology projects and media production operations. The position requires previously acquired microbiology skills and knowledge obtained thru a college biological science degree program.

Anaerobe Systems manufactures products which are primarily sold to hospital laboratories for identification of anaerobic bacterial infections. Culture media and anaerobe chambers sold to biotech laboratories, universities and research institutions may be used in clinical trials with results published in research reports. Because of this effect, technical accuracy and integrity when assessing product quality and reporting problems are of the upmost importance in the Quality Control Technician's work habits.

*Experience*

No prior work experience required. A degree in biological sciences required. Must have microbiology lab experience.

*Major Duties*

1. Prepares reagents and biological stains; performs and records results for a variety of complex microbiology identification tests.

2. Sets up and completes quality control tests for each lot of culture media prior to release to the Shipping Department; record results and determines disposition (pass/fail).

3. Verifies and documents quality control results for designated instruments and monitoring devices (i.e., pH meter, calipers) in the media production area.

4. Assist the company with new product development, product testing, or other research and development projects by following experimental procedures and recording data using general microbiology skills and methods.

5. Maintains an orderly and clean workplace.

6. Assists with anaerobic microbiology training for customers who attend Anaerobe Systems chamber training/workshops or for other students.

*Knowledge Required*

1. Knowledge of scientific, mathematical and microbiology principles to interpret microbiology tests and assess quality of finished products.

2. Skilled in microbiological techniques to perform quality control testing of products, to teach students and perform special projects.

3. Ability to operate equipment used in quality control testing (i.e., incubators, anaerobe chambers, pH meters)

4. Ability to organize, analyze, interpret, and evaluate data in the solution of quality control problems and to relay issues to the Quality Control Manager when necessary.

5. Ability to communicate effectively with others (i.e., customers, co-workers, management)

*Physical Demands*

In general, the technician must be capable of standing for a prolonged time (i.e., 1-2 hours) and prolonged sitting with arms outstretched while working in an enclosed anaerobe chamber. Occasional moderate lifting (15-35 pounds) is required, will be required to move, and change gas cylinders. Must be able to tolerate off-putting or foul odors created by bacteria growing on culture media.

*Work Environment*

Most of the work is performed in a microbiology laboratory or in the media production area where specific protective equipment (i.e., lab coats or smocks, safety glasses/personal glasses, disposable gloves, closed toe/non-skid shoes) and safety practices (i.e., tied back hair, frequent handwashing, proper chemical handling, bio-cleaning) are required. There are potential exposures to both microorganism and chemical hazards. Safety training is provided.

*Work Schedule*

Monday-Thursday, 6:30am-5:00pm (4d x 10h)

Job Type: Full-time
