Job Description:
X is Alphabet's moonshot factory. We are a diverse group of
inventors and entrepreneurs who build and launch technologies that
aim to improve the lives of millions, even billions, of people. Our
goal: 10x impact on the world's most intractable problems, not just
10% improvement. We approach projects that have the aspiration and
riskiness of research with the speed and ambition of a
startup.About the Team:We are exploring automated design for
electromagnetic devices such as optical networking equipment,
lenses, image sensors, and lidar systems. We are leveraging
Google-scale compute, optimization, and machine learning in order
to enable 10x gains in ultra-large-scale simulation and
optimization schemes.About the Role:We're looking for a software
engineer with electromagnetic simulation expertise, either FDTD or
other types of algorithms. Beyond ensuring simulation accuracy and
numerical stability, you will enable simulations to efficiently
scale when running in Google's datacenters. How you will make 10X
impact:Push the envelope and leverage Google-scale infrastructure
to enable simulations of increasing size and complexity to
run.Build and own the end-to-end simulators you develop. Your work
will directly impact our users' ability to get things done. You
will be expected to own the maintenance lifecycle.Educate the team
on simulation trade-offs, challenges and spread knowledge
throughout the team.Work effectively with cross-functional teams of
engineers, scientists, and domain experts. Listen to their needs,
propose, design and implement solutions. What you should have:BS/MS
in CS, or equivalent practical experience.Ability to work in a
small but growing team and help onboard new people.A fast learner
with strong coding skills (preferably in multiple languages, but
Python is a must) and a strong commitment to code quality. It would
be great if you had one or more of these skills too:Physics
background in computational electromagnetics, fluidics, mechanics,
or acoustics.Experience developing large-scale simulators for
ordinary / partial differential equations using finite difference,
finite volume, finite element, or other techniques.Hands-on
experience developing code for accelerators like GPUs and TPUs
