The Mechanical Engineer will independently perform a variety of
complicated mechanical engineering tasks, including design and
development activities in support of specific scientific and
engineering programs, taking responsibility for sub-projects and
sub-groups within major projects or research programs at Lawrence
Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). These activities may include
conceptualization, design, planning, implementation, and completion
of assigned problems, tasks, and projects, which have a high degree
of complexity and range in scope. Moreover, the Mechanical Engineer
may conduct, coordinate, and/or make significant contributions to
large projects or multiple small projects utilizing independent
judgment and decision making while working within schedule and
This position is to support the Advanced Light Source Upgrade
(ALS-U) project. ALS-U includes a planned upgrade of the main
electron particle accelerator complex of the Advanced Light Source
(ALS) at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab that will provide
revolutionary x-ray capabilities with up to 1000 times brighter
x-ray beams. The project is currently in a conceptual design phase.
ALS-U will replace the existing storage ring with a new,
high-performance storage ring and the addition of a low-emittance,
full-energy accumulator ring in the existing storage-ring tunnel to
enable on-axis, swap-out injection (an exchange of electron bunch
trains between the accumulator ring and storage ring) using fast

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Essential Using extensive
knowledge and experience of mechanical engineering concepts and
tools, perform as a fully qualified and experienced professional
engineer and resource.
Work on small projects, independently use professional engineering
concepts to develop practical and creative solutions to complicated
problems whose scope is typically in known technology with
incorporation of new technology.
Take initiative to assist others in resolving issues outside
immediate area of responsibility.
Participate in discussions of the engineering components of
scientific/project initiatives, working with other groups and
scientists in problem-solving and defining procedures and

recommendations for presentation and approval of senior technical

the design, fabrication, modification, and evaluation of mechanical

Education and Experience: Requires a BS degree, or equivalent,
in engineering or a related field. Normally 2+ years of relevant
