Title:Support ScientistKBR is seeking a Biospecimen Support
Scientist to support the NASA Institutional Specimen Collection
(ISC). The NASA ISC is a centralized service function which
supports the acquisition, management and dissemination of
biospecimens from spaceflight and space-related investigations. The
selected candidate will facilitate the daily operations associated
with fulfilling specimen requests for acquisition and data
management. Please note this is a Part-Time, 20 hour per week
position.Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Works independently to complete assigned tasks using
established and/or published procedures.
- Support of the SMCC (Space Microbial Culture Collection)
microbiology lab consisting of: culturing of diverse strains of
pure-culture bacteria and yeast; preserving strains using
cryopreservation and lyophilization. Perform identification through
16S sequencing and analysis.
- In collaboration with the ISC Project Manager, gather
requirements for establishing a microbiology specimen collection
lab. Candidate will support the startup of the SMCC lab;
configuring lab space and equipment.
- In collaboration with the ISC team leader, gathers requirements
for the acquisition of biological material from internal customers,
develops work instructions, negotiates collection study contracts,
facilitates purchase requisitions and collaborates with vendors to
acquire biological materials of interest to ISC's projects, in
compliance with Good Clinical Practices, Quality, Business and
Industry best practices/standards.
- Delivers on biological material collection projects per
commitments and prioritizes resources to ensure flexible delivery
to scientists and principal investigators in compliance with ISC
processes, including but not limited to the collection and
maintenance of legal regulatory and ethics documentations,
generation of an accurate and complete data set, managing material
logistics with operating permits and maintaining information in a
validated laboratory information management system for Good
Clinical Practices and Quality Standards Performs work according to
established internal safety guidelines and procedures, and as
specified by appropriate external regulatory agencies (e.g.,
- Performs data management activities, such as data file
transfers from suppliers, data import, data quality and consistency
checks, resolution of data discrepancies, and data export while
working within a validated laboratory information management
- May troubleshoot issues related to tools (inventory management
systems, LSDA dev tool). Keeps supervisor/team leader informed of
project status, particularly of significant findings and results in
critical problem areas.
- Establishes key relationships and work with individuals or
teams outside of immediate functional areas or ISC.
- Helps with stocking and inventory check in Biorepository
laboratory when required.Required Education/Experience: Bachelor's
degree in life sciences with 4 years of experience, or 10 years of
experience in lieu of a degree, in a laboratory or clinical
operations setting.Required Skills/Training: Experience with
handling and maintaining biospecimen tissues.Desired
- Experience in basic laboratory microbiology methods, including
aseptic culture technique; and basic molecular biology methods,
including DNA extraction, PCR, and sequence analysis.
- Experience in lyophilization, and experience working with
non-model and difficult-to-grow organisms, are encouraged but not
- Experience with NASA processes.
- Experience supporting spaceflight projects.Scheduled Weekly
