Description:

EdCast's mission is to empower individuals and organizations to work smarter, achieve more and be future-ready. As we grow to achieve that mission, we're looking to add a highly technical, hands-on, and mission-driven Director of Software Engineering to lead our engineering efforts. This role will report directly to the VP of Software Engineering.

A critical aspect of this role is the ability to remain a strong hands-on technologist while also being able to offer support, insight, coaching, and proactively surface ideas and concerns of your direct reports. Strong time-management skills and experience in highly autonomous roles are critical. As a leader, you are highly accountable with strong interpersonal skills in working with Engineers, Product leaders, Vendors, and Customers. You function effectively in a busy environment with little or no supervision and are comfortable making independent decisions.

Our applications serve millions of users in providing learning in their flow of work. We have over 100 team members on our product engineering team working across various components. Our tech stack is React and Ruby on Rails services. We use Agile methodologies across the board. We are leveraging CI/CD, TDD, Terraform automation for a 100% cloud (AWS) multi-tenant SaaS infrastructure. Heavy usage of RDS, Elasticsearch, EKS, Redis, and InfluxDB for analytics events.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure delivery of products roadmap and customer-requested enhancements across the entire stack including web applications, mobile apps, backend, and integrations to external vendors
  • Define and implement common architectures, platforms, and technologies in collaboration with other technology leaders
  • Oversee the day-to-day technical and architectural standards, providing guidance to engineers at all levels
  • Collaborate with product management and other business stakeholders on defining the product roadmap and roadmap requirements
  • Serving as a liaison and primary point of contact for cross-functional internal teams; acting as a project manager to evaluate, prioritize, develop, manage, implement, and test technology initiatives
  • Having a broader impact outside your immediate team by working closely with other engineering leaders to constantly improve the overall developer community experience (a few examples are focused on security, improving performance, more documentation)
  • Mature, evolve, and implement software engineering practices, such as agile methodology, design standards, coding standards, peer reviews, testing, etc.
  • Manage and optimize a hybrid team of local and remote resources, with a balance of productivity, flexibility, and cost
  • Measure and report on productivity and quality of teams and progress of initiatives on roadmap
  • Lead, mentor, and manage individual technical contributors and managers/team leads
  • Conducting regular 1-on-1s with team members; supporting team members in hitting individual and team deadlines and goals by helping remove obstacles and solve problems
  • Work closely with the recruiting team to hire high potential candidates from diverse backgrounds

    Requirements
    • Work experience as a Director of Engineering or in a similar senior-level position at an engineering department
    • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in full-stack web technologies including Ruby on Rails (preferred), Python/Django, Java, C++ etc. Experience in one or more of front-end Web technologies including React, Angular.js.
    • Extensive experience with cloud technologies and modern human-computer interfaces
    • Hands-on experience in back-end and front-end development
    • Prior proven experience in architecture an elasticsearch cluster for performance and scale highly desired
    • Leadership abilities with a strategic mind
    • Good understanding of agile methodologies
    • Excellent project management skills
    • BS/MS in Engineering, Computer Science or relevant field
